Water Quality Before Medication

Most of the symptoms that send an aquarist looking for an antibacterial — clamped fins, rapid breathing, cloudy eyes, frayed fin edges, loss of appetite, sudden lethargy — are produced just as often by water chemistry as by bacteria. Testing the water costs a few minutes and tells you whether you have an infection problem or an environment problem. It is the first step, every time.

The nitrogen cycle in one paragraph

Fish excrete ammonia. One group of bacteria in your filter converts ammonia to nitrite; a second group converts nitrite to nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite are acutely toxic; nitrate is far less so and is removed by water changes and plants. A tank is "cycled" when both bacterial populations are large enough to process the load in real time, which is why ammonia and nitrite should read zero in an established tank.

What to test, and what the numbers mean

  • Ammonia (NH3/NH4+). Should read 0. Anything above zero is damaging gill tissue right now. Its toxicity rises with pH and temperature, so the same reading is worse in a warm, alkaline tank than a cool, acidic one.
  • Nitrite (NO2-). Should read 0. Nitrite interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, which is why affected fish gasp at the surface even in well-aerated water.
  • Nitrate (NO3-). Low is better. Chronically high nitrate is a stressor rather than an acute poison, and it tracks how overdue your water changes are.
  • pH. Stability matters more than a specific value for most species. A swinging pH is harder on fish than a steady one slightly away from ideal.
  • Temperature. Check it with a thermometer you trust, not the heater dial. Fluctuation suppresses immune function.

Liquid reagent test kits are more reliable than paper strips. Test at the same time of day, because ammonia and pH move on a daily rhythm in planted tanks.

Reading the results

If ammonia or nitrite is above zero, you have found the problem, or at least the problem underneath the problem. The response is water changes and reducing the load — not medication. Change enough water to bring the reading down, stop feeding for a day or two, remove any uneaten food and decaying plant matter, and check that the filter is actually flowing.

If every parameter is in range and the fish is still deteriorating, that is when an infection becomes a reasonable hypothesis — and when a veterinarian can help you work out which organism is involved. The answer determines which class of antibacterial is appropriate; guessing wastes time the fish may not have and selects for resistant bacteria.

Why a new tank crashes

A tank set up last week has almost no nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia rises, then nitrite, and both peak before the bacterial colonies catch up. Stocking a new tank heavily, or adding fish faster than the filter can adapt, produces exactly the symptom picture people mistake for a disease outbreak. Cycle the tank before adding fish, add stock gradually, and test through the first two months.

Habits that prevent most problems

  • Regular partial water changes with dechlorinated, temperature-matched water.
  • Feeding what the fish finish in a couple of minutes, and removing what they do not.
  • Rinsing filter media in old tank water, never under the tap — chlorine kills the bacteria you are trying to keep.
  • Quarantining new arrivals so that whatever they bring stays out of the display tank.
  • Testing before you medicate, not after.

Testing properly

Liquid reagent kits require the discipline the instructions describe: rinse the vial in tank water, fill to the line at eye level, hold the reagent bottle vertically so drop size is consistent, cap and shake for the stated time, and read against a white background in daylight rather than under aquarium lighting. Reagents expire — write the opening date on the bottle. If a result surprises you, repeat it before acting on it.

Chlorine, chloramine and dechlorinator

Municipal water is treated to be safe for people, not for fish. Chlorine damages gill tissue directly; chloramine, increasingly common, is more stable and does not gas off if you leave water standing. Use a conditioner rated for chloramine, dose it for the full volume of the tank when doing large changes, and remember that chloramine breaks down into ammonia — which your filter then has to process.

KH, GH and why pH moves

Carbonate hardness (KH) is the water's buffering capacity: its resistance to pH change. Low KH is why some tanks swing between morning and evening or crash after a big water change. General hardness (GH) measures dissolved calcium and magnesium, which matters for species selection and also for how some medications behave — tetracyclines bind to those ions, which reduces what remains available in the water. If your pH is unstable, look at KH before you look at pH adjusters.

Doing a water change that actually helps

The effect of a water change is proportional: replacing 50% of the volume halves the concentration of whatever is dissolved in it. That is the arithmetic behind "change more water" as the response to an ammonia reading. Match temperature, dechlorinate before or as the water goes in, and refill gently so that substrate and fish are not blasted. For an acute ammonia or nitrite reading, several moderate changes over a day are gentler than one enormous one, especially if tank pH and tap pH differ.

Cycling a new tank

Fishless cycling means adding an ammonia source to an empty, filtered tank and testing until ammonia converts to nitrite and nitrite converts to nitrate, with both reading zero within a day of dosing. That typically takes several weeks at room temperature and is faster when seeded with media from an established filter. It is slower than stocking immediately, and it is the difference between a stable tank and two months of firefighting.

Equipment failures worth ruling out

Before concluding that a tank has a disease problem, confirm the heater is holding temperature, the filter is actually turning over, the airline is not kinked, and nothing has died out of sight. A single decomposing fish or a snail behind the filter intake will produce an ammonia spike that looks exactly like a mystery illness.
