Legal & Regulatory Information

What these products are

The products sold on this site are labelled and marketed for use in ornamental fish and pet birds — animals that are not raised for food. They are supplied over the counter for that purpose, in the manufacturer's sealed packaging, with the active ingredient, strength, count, lot code and expiry date printed on the label.

What they are not

  • Not for human use. They are not approved, labelled or sold for human consumption, and they are not a substitute for a prescription. If you need medication for yourself or another person, see a physician or pharmacist.
  • Not for food-producing animals. Do not use them in animals intended for human consumption, including food fish, poultry kept for eggs or meat, or livestock. Different rules and withdrawal requirements apply to those animals entirely.
  • Not FDA-approved animal drugs. Antibacterials sold over the counter for ornamental fish are not subject to the FDA's new animal drug approval process. The US Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine publishes background on unapproved animal drugs, and we encourage customers to read it.

Your responsibilities as a buyer

By ordering you confirm that you are at least 18, that the product is for ornamental fish or pet birds that you keep, and that you will not use it in humans or in animals destined for the food chain. State and local rules on the sale and use of animal drugs vary; where your jurisdiction restricts a product, its rules take precedence over anything on this page.

Antimicrobial stewardship

Unnecessary and incomplete courses of antibacterials select for resistant bacteria, and that consequence is shared far beyond one aquarium. We ask customers to treat only when treatment is warranted, to follow the label, to finish the course, and to involve an aquatic or avian veterinarian in the decision. The American Veterinary Medical Association publishes stewardship guidance that explains why this matters.

Disposal

Do not flush unused or expired product or pour it down the drain. Use a pharmacy take-back programme or your local household hazardous waste service.
